Independence Days Update

The more abysmal the economy looks, the more inspired I am to pursue Independence Days.   This past week we:

1. Plant Something or Take Care of Something You’ve Planted:

  • Planted Italian parsley, cilantro/coriander, and dill.  (Thomas kept taking the bag of watermelon seeds out of my seed box and asking to plant them.  I explained that it was too cold for watermelon to grow properly and he looked so very sad.  I promised him it would be the first thing we plant this spring.)
  • Planted some sea lavender (a decorative perennial) from transplants provided by my next door neighbor (The same neighbor who gave us the delicious cheese last week, thanks again Margie!)

2. Harvest something:

  • A few valiant strawberries and raspberries, all rapidly consumed by Thomas.

3. Preserve something:

  • Nothing this week.  Going to have to do better next week.

4. Prep something:

  • Cleaned up the yard in preparation for our fist major winter storm.

5. Cook something new:

6. Manage your reserves:

  • Invested in my first large bulk purchase of dry staples.  We are now the proud owners of 25 lbs of organic popcorn (grown relatively locally in central CA) and 25 lbs of organic black beans.  Actually I think we’re probably already down to 23 lbs of popcorn!
  • Concerned about potential shortages due to the economic collapse I have made a list of essential supplies and been gradually trying to acquire them.  I’ll try to post the list at some point.

7. Work on local food systems:

  • Still working on those holiday gifts I mentioned last week.
