It is also very disturbing to me when I see people begging on the street corners. I grew up in a small town in SD, and we didn't have any homeless people there, at least not that I was aware of. When I go back there to see my Mom, there still are not any people begging for help. Here is what I do now. I try to carry some $5.00 gift cards to Safeway, or Mc Donalds, or Burger King. If I feel that someone seems genuinely in need of help, I give them one. At least, I am not giving them cash, and they are able to at least get something to eat. My church also has a giving tree set up when you walk in, and it has paper tags on it with things like "men's underwear", "bath towels", or "women's toiletries". You can take the ones you would like, buy the items, and then drop them under the tree in a bag, with the tag tied to it. They see that it gets to people who need them. I wish I could provide a decent job for anyone who would like one, that would be the best. Oh well, I do think that if those of us who can, would give just a little bit every week, it would make a difference. I count my blessings every day! Love, Mom

There are 2 men who sleep in the subway station when I bring Lucy home from school. She has never asked why, nor questioned that there are people who ask for money on the train. I've often wondered what I would tell her if she did ask, how I would explain that they don't have a place to live.
