I was so stricken by your earlier post, particularly the rough lessen for your older child to learn about terrible people so young - but now he's seeing a wonderful example of civic responsibility and power. He is sure to be proud of you and take the lesson to heart, as you did with your mom.

I am constantly frustrated by southern california law enforcement. They really seem to have a ridiculously strong us/them mentality (as in an attitude that law enforcers are not in the same category as other citizens), which makes them horrible at relating to crime victims, and utter hypocrites when it comes to obeying traffic laws.

@Luke, that was actually one of the suggestions given at the neighborhood meeting last night - to keep a camera/cell phone near the front door and snap pictures of any persons or cars you see that look out of the ordinary. Then if there is an incident in the neighborhood you have potential evidence to show the police.

I am so please with the response you got and equally unhappy with the 45 minute response to the person casing the neighborhood. If they had confronted the scout that would have let the bad guys know to lie low or move on. Hmmm, maybe if pictures of whoever is knocking on the neighborhood doors would probably accomplish the same thing.

Gina: You are so right it takes a lot to rile your mom but look out when you do. We both taught you to stand up and speak your mind. After your call the other night and hearing how the police failed to follow proper procedures when we talked the other night and you let me know the folks at the PPD had called it gave me pause to think they were going to try harder. I just saw on the internet where 2 legislators in South Dakota want to make gun ownership mandatory, it will never pass but that was thier old west solution to crime.

I still like Thomas's idea of the saber cat as a house pet, a large, no huge, cat with big mean teeth to scare away any intruder. We all must do our part to stand up against crime, neighborhood watchs, looking out for each other and more police and less liberal judges,
